Instructors
Theory instructors
The DTAL Theory classes, 1 and 2, may only be delivered by an approved DTAL Theory Instructor and in accordance with the DTAL Program Theory 1 and Theory 2 course documents.
All DTAL registered instructors must abide by the strict Conditions of Registration for DTAL Instructors (pdf 117Kb); including police criminal history checks, as well as, minimum qualification and insurance requirements. Further more, DTAL Theory Instructors must be approved by the Department of Planning and Infrastructure and meet, and abide by, their Code of Practice for Driving Instructors in the NT (pdf 82Kb).
Practical instructors
DTAL registered Practical Instructors are the only instructors permitted to provide the practical (in-car) training associated with the DTAL Program. DTAL Practical Instructors must, at all times, maintain a Driving Instructor endorsement on their driver’s licence, and abide by the strict Conditions of Registration for DTAL Instructors (pdf 117Kb); including police criminal history checks, as well as, minimum qualification and insurance requirements. In addition, DTAL Practical Instructors must meet, and abide by, the Code of Practice for Driving Instructors in the NT (pdf 82Kb).
Students are not restricted to one instructor, and may change as often as they please. The fee charged by each driving school differs; however, prices are currently averaging between $50 and $65 per lesson. As the DTAL Logbook Vouchers are valued at $40 (plus GST) each, the student will need to pay the difference between the instructor’s fee and the subsidy.
Students must be reminded that they are responsible for their Logbooks and are not to surrender them to their instructor at any time.
