Indigenous and Regional Training

DET in Your Community

The Department of Education and Training (DET) operates four regional and ten remote training centre facilities to assist and support regional and remote communities in accessing vocational training programs. The regional centres are in Katherine, Jabiru, Tennant Creek and Nhulunbuy. For information about remote training centres, including locations and facilities, contact your nearest regional training centre.

Regional Services

DET staff in regional centres are able to:

  • Provide information on courses being delivered at regional and remote training centres
  • Assist communities and organisations identify their training needs and develop training plans
  • Provide information on training organisations and the training programs they are approved to deliver
  • Assist communities and organisations access DET funding to support their training needs
  • Provide rooms and equipment for the delivery of training courses.

Funding for Community Training

Indigenous Funding Programs

DET provides Indigenous people living in urban, regional and remote communities with an opportunity to access vocational education and training (VET).

Flexible Response Funding (FRF) – allows for packaging of short training programs that meet the specific training needs of Indigenous clients and is delivered on site in the community. FRF supports accredited and non-accredited training that links into community projects and leads to employment outcomes, improved employability skills or enterprise development.

Training for Remote Youth (TRY) – is aimed at bringing youth disengaged from school, Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) and local communities/schools together to provide structured training and learning experiences that prepares the youth for employment in the community or re-engages them in further learning.

Indigenous Training for Employment Program (ITEP) – supports practical, flexible and integrated projects to ensure adults in regional and remote areas can take up vocational education and training (VET) opportunities and pathways to employment. ITEP funding has been allocated for 2008.

Training Partners

  • What are Registered Training Organisations (RTO’s) – are approved by relevant State/ Territory recognition authority to deliver nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications and programs.
  • Information on accessing RTO’s – contact the Field Officer in your region. The Field Officer can provide information and contact details of RTO’s in the Territory and the courses they are approved to deliver.

Student Support

DET does not provide child care support, transport for students or wage support for students attending training courses funded by DET.
