School to Work Transition
The Northern Territory Government wants to give all young people the opportunity to participate in and contribute to the economic and social development of the Territory. To achieve this, we need to assist students in their transition from school to work, further education or training.
A School to Work Transition Strategic Plan 2007-2009 has been developed to ensure young people have access to the entire range of learning and training opportunities, and career development support in their post compulsory years.
The School to Work Transition Strategic Plan 2007 - 2009
The School to Work Transition Strategic Plan 2007-2009 was developed in consultation with schools, students, parents, industry, business, careers advisers, registered training organisations, governments and unions.
The priorities under the Plan are:
- Engaging Industry, Employers and the Community
- Preparing Students
- Building School Capacity and Culture
- Pathways
A number of strategies and initiatives are being implemented for each priority area. These are further detailed in the school to work implementation plan. Copies of both the strategic plan and implementation plan can be accessed through the following links:

The Workready Program
The Workready Program is a school to work transition program that aims to assist and encourage Year 11 and 12 school students to take part in structured vocational education and training (VET) that leads to school-based apprenticeships and traineeships, and hopefully, to an ongoing apprenticeship or traineeship.
Funded by the Department of Employment, Education and Training (DEET) and in partnership with the schools involved, Group Training NT, local businesses and industry, the Workready Program was expanded from two Darwin high schools in 2005 to four Darwin high schools in 2006, with more high schools in Darwin and regional areas to take part in 2007.
