Building Community Capacity Linkage Project
Building Community Capital To Support Sustainable Numeracy Education in Remote Locations is a research project funded through the ARC Linkage Research Grant Scheme, 2006-2008. Partners in the project are RMIT University, in collaboration with Northern Territory Department of Education and Training (DET), Charles Darwin University (CDU), and Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education (BIITE).
The overall aim of Building Community Capital To Support Sustainable Numeracy Education in Remote Locations is to explore the possibilities for improving Yolngu student numeracy outcomes by means of an alternative, community-based approach to professional development in mathematics for Yolngu team teachers and community members. The research sites are Shepherdson College at Galiwin’ku and Mapuru Homeland School.
An important part of the research involves an investigation into the use of Djambarrpuyngu as the medium of instruction for the assessment and teaching of western mathematics and the linking of Yolngu mathematical ideas to areas of western mathematics. A Community Reference group is being formed to support both these endeavours.
