Curriculum

Northern Territory Curriculum Framework

Since 2002 the Northern Territory has had a mandated Curriculum Framework that identifies outcomes for all learners from Transition - Year 10. The Northern Territory Curriculum Framework (NTCF) is the document that teachers access to select the most appropriate outcomes for their learners in order to plan relevant and meaningful learning experiences.

2007 is the year identified for a Curriculum review to begin. Teaching, Learning and Standards Division will facilitate this process. Currently the early stages of the curriculum review phase are underway and will provide opportunity for the National Statements of Learning to be incorporated into the NTCF. It is an Australian Government requirement that all states and territories incorporate these statements into curriculum documents by January 2008. For more information about the Statements of Learning visit http://www.mceetya.edu.au/mceetya/ publications.

Northern Territory Certificate of EducationStudents in Year 11 and 12 in the Northern Territory undertake the Northern Territory Certificate of Education. Administration of the NTCE is managed by the Senior Secondary Assessment Board of South Australia. The NTCE is rigorous yet flexible, providing pathways to a variety of post-school options. Upon completion of the NTCE, students will receive a certificate that is recognised throughout Australia and internationally.

The NTCE is currently being reviewed, and will result in changes to the way senior secondary education is structured in the Northern Territory. The new Northern Territory Certificate of Education will be phased in from 2009 to 2011, and no student will be disadvantaged as a result of this change. The new NTCE will be designed to support the diverse needs of students across the Territory, and to recognise many different forms of learning that our young people are undertaking.

A Teaching and Learning Framework (TaLF) will also be created and become a part of the NTCF through explicit links.

A theoretical model called Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes (SOLO) will underpin the review of the NTCF. All those involved in the review/renewal will engage with SOLO during their involvement. Teachers have the opportunity to be involved in various stages of the process and can register their interest in any of the following options as per Principal’s Update # 12 – 1st May 2007 or as per contacts listed below.
