Evidence of Learning
In Term 2, 2007 an Evidence of Learning Folder including a CD was distributed to all schools.
This folder is to be used as a storehouse for collection of annotated student samples illustrating student progress in the English and Mathematics Learning Areas and the ESL component of the NTCF. It will support the collection and annotation of samples of evidence of learning, the identification of student achievement and promote professional dialogue during moderation activities.
Annotated evidence of learning provides teachers with the opportunity to:
- Develop common understandings about the demonstrations of student achievement against the NTCF outcomes.
- Use the samples as a reference to identify student progress along the NTCF outcomes developmental continua.
- Validate standards of students’ learning evidence, thus clarifying the reliability and validity of the professional judgements teachers make.
- Develop school/cluster based annotated samples.
- Design teaching and learning programs (including assessment) at the appropriate level.
- Use as examples of students’ achievement when reporting to parents and goal setting with students.
Schools are encouraged to include school developed annotated evidence of learning, arising from school-based moderation activities, in addition to the samples published and available here on this website. The samples should be organised so that within a strand, examples of student progress in all of the NTCF Bands and Levels indicate demonstrations of emerging, solid or comprehensive evidence. Each sample should outline the task and its context and be annotated to illustrate how the outcomes are demonstrated through the indicators.
Recommended Processes for using the CD and folder:
- Save contents of CD on school server where teachers can access freely.
- Print Evidence of Learning from CD and place in folder.
- Ensure that folder is in an easily accessible place for teachers to refer to as they assess student work.
- Assess student work at a class level using the moderation information paper and the Evidence of Learning on CD as a guide.
- Collect a representative sample of evidence of learning from your class and attach context sheet from CD (represent the range of high, medium and low samples at each band or level in your class).
- Conduct school based moderation using the moderation process flowchart as a guide. Support materials on CD may also help with this process.
- Participate in Cluster moderation and System Validation and act on any recommendations made.
- Add Evidence of Learning that was validated at the cluster moderation with feedback to the folder for future reference.
- Add Evidence of Learning that is published to the folder for future reference.
