Assessment of Student Competencies

The Assessment of Student Competencies is a tool designed to measure those outcomes considered critical for success in the formal academic programmes of Year One. The assessment is administered on current Transition students who will be turning six years of age and who will progress to Year One in 2009. It is a requirement that all Age of Entry Schools participate in the Assessment of Student Competencies to monitor the progress of students throughout the year.

The Assessment of Student competencies aims to:

  • Provide baseline data for transition students
  • Aggregate and report on data at a system level about literacy and numeracy levels
  • Inform and guide teaching practice and interventions
  • Be used in conjunction with and support the 'Strong Beginnings: An Explicit Guide to Quality Practice in the Early Years' document

The information obtained from the assessment tool acts as a safety net for:

  • Parents and educators giving a clear picture of student skills
  • Identifies 'at risk' students early, in order to put in place suitable and timely programmes to support and assist students
