Building Relationships and School Wellbeing
Building Relationships and School Wellbeing (BR&SW) was DET's response to increased calls from schools for support with issues of student behaviour. BR&SW was developed in 2004 by qualified professionals from Student Services, and is based on best practice and a MCEETYA report on behaviour. BR&SW involves 10 Key Elements including the National Safe Schools Framework to develop a climate of wellbeing within the school community. The success of BR&SW is having an above establishment position that works with current school staff to audit the school whilst developing relationships and trust within the school community.
Qualified Teachers are placed as above establishment positions in selected schools to assist them to review their policies and processes, the relationships between students, teachers, parents, the school and wider community. Once these elements are reviewed and a plan is developed, they assist in the implementation of this plan for the agreed period.
Building Relationships and School Wellbeing (BR&SW), continues to be implemented in schools throughout the Territory with 31 schools having been involved since it commencement in June 2004. BR&SW has reached 12,527 of the 32,921 students (and their families) and 1088 of the 2440 teachers in NT Government Schools since June 2004.
The response from completing schools continues to be enthusiastic, with schools reporting excellent outcomes and manageable sustainability of Whole School Wellbeing.
