School Attendance

Regular school attendance is important for children and young adults to have a bright future. School attendance is a priority for DET and the department is strategically addressing attendance issues through the 6 Point Plan.

Point 1: Policy and procedures

Develop school and department policies and procedures to record and track attendance and, if necessary, intervene in student absenteeism

  • Use clear procedures for following up if students are often absent
  • Develop a tracking system for all school aged children in the Northern Territory
Point 2: Coordination of school based staff

Coordinate and train school staff who work on improving school attendance

  • Coordinate and provide training to Indigenous education workers
  • Provide a package to aid staff in understanding a wide range of attendance issues
Point 3: Community engagement

Partnerships between community and government

  • Develop agreements with 15 of our largest remote schools and make school attendance a key component
  • Deliver a ‘value of schooling’ campaign over 5 years.
Point 4: Accountability

Continual review of school and department practices to improve attendance

  • Review school attendance continually through the department’s accountability frameworks
  • Monitor enrolment and attendance records for quality at the system level
Point 5: Interagency and Commonwealth collaboration

Local attendance strategies for improving school attendance

  • Locate education engagement coordinators in regional areas to target school attendance
  • Support local incentives that are shown to improve school attendance
Point 6: Inter-agency and cross sector collaboration

Work with other agencies in a whole of government approach to improve school attendance

  • Work together to provide services to students and their families
  • Support non-government organisations’ programs for school attendance
