2007 Award Winners
It is with pleasure that we announce the winners for the 2007 Youth Business Awards:
Youth Business Award Winners
Business Name: Chao
Students: Hong Anh Lam, Benyarkan Buayam & Jobelle Rodriguez
School: Darwin High School
When people stated that they wanted healthy food to eat while at school/work, these students formed a partnership and decided to sell fresh Vietnamese spring rolls. They came up with the name “Chao” as in Vietnamese it means “thank you” and in Italian it means “hello”. It represents what the students wanted to say to their customers “Hello and thank you for buying our product”. Each student took on a particular role in the business and ran it once a week for approximately five months.
Youth Business Award Incentive Winners
Business Name: Shine Time Baby Supplies
Students: Sylvan Bonson & Mesaik Darcy
School: Maningrida CEC
After discussions with various people, these students decided to sell baby products in their local community. After purchasing their products in Darwin they advertised the business to the local community by displaying posters. On the days when they sold their baby supplies the students drove around the community in the school truck to find people who would be interested in purchasing their items. They also involved their other classmates in their business project. The students also had the opportunity to attend the Gama Festival, so they took their baby supplies with them and were able to offer other people baby products at a good price.
Youth Business Award, Business Plan Winner
Business Name: Ultimate Paintball
Student: Maria Koulianos
School: Darwin High School
In August of 2007 legislation was passed to make it legal to operate a paintball business in the Northern Territory. This business plan provides an outline of what it would involve in making this a reality. It offers an array of memberships as well as game packages that can be played over two types of arenas. Food and beverage facilities as well as merchandising were also considered. Various industry sources and the Internet were used to assist in making the business plan as accurate as possible.
Youth Business Award, Business Plan Incentive Award
Business Name: Top End Rivers & Wrecks Fishing Charters
Students: Bradley Meiklejohn & Chris Mills
School: Casuarina Secondary College
Using the Territories popular tourist industry, these students developed a business plan for a fishing charter business. After researching the local industry as well as seeking advice from those already in the business, their company would offer opportunities that would allow small groups of people to experience a day of quality fishing while visiting the Top End.
Innovation Award (Sponsored by the NT Research and Innovation Board)
Business Name: JL Planning
Student: Jessica Christie
School: Casuarina Secondary College
This business plan offers its customers a unique experience by organising a formal dinner in a persons own home. These dinners can be themed for a special occasion or be provided for those that like to entertain with a touch of class. The business would decorate the venue, organise the catering, and at the end of the event, take it all away.
Encouragement Award (Sponsored by the NT Research and Innovation Board)
Business Name: Kasuku
Students: Nadear Kanokruetai & Sarah Saida
School: Darwin High School
This partnership ran for three months and provided lunch for staff and students. They developed their business plan by using the results from a survey and research. At lunch times the students sold sausages on bread with optional onions and sauce. The students involved in this project belong to the Secondary Intensive English Unit (SIEU) and had arrived in Australia less than one year before they began operating Kasuku. There were other students in the class that also assisted in the running of this business.
On behalf of the Northern Territory Government, we would like to thank all of the schools, teachers and students who participated in the 2007 Youth Business Awards, and once again congratulate the award winners.
