Professional Development (Literacy)

The Department of Education and Training (DET) aims to deliver quality professional development in a range of contexts and all sessions can be tailored to suit the needs of a school. Participants will add resources based on the NT Curriculum Framework (NTCF) to their literacy teaching tool kit. Opportunities for sharing implementation in the classroom will follow each session.

Support is available in a number of ways, including:

  • Whole school sessions at staff meetings or on pupil free days
  • Working with small groups or individuals or at unit meetings
  • Helping to organise visits between schools to share best practice
  • Conducting demonstration lessons in your school
  • Centrally run sessions that provide opportunities for cross school exchanges and cater for individual needs
  • Demonstration lessons in your school.

Professional development in 2006

Setting Up for Literacy Success

Linking theories of learning to the realities of:

  • Establishing your classroom environment
  • Writing ongoing literacy programs
  • Authentically assessing student learning.

Stepping Out

Literacy learning across the curriculum for secondary schools.

Story Magic

Play with words and language to rediscover the magical experience of story writing.

Literacy Links Learning

Identifying the literacy teaching in integrated units of work, rich tasks and /or learning sequences across the curriculum using the NTCF and support resources. This can be adapted for primary and secondary schools.

Moderation

Supporting teachers to make consistent judgements about student’s learning through standards validation.

Literacy and Numeracy Plans

We can support schools to write or implement Literacy and Numeracy Plans.

We also coordinate the reviews of Literacy and Numeracy Plans and hope to conduct group reviews for all schools in 2006.

Evidence of Learning: Reading

During 2006 we will be collecting samples of reading assessment to add to the Evidence of Learning Folder. We will work with schools to provide professional development on reading assessment and organize central moderation sessions with interested teachers.

First Steps: Second Edition Reading

There are three ways you will be able to access the professional development connected with the second edition of First Steps.

  1. You can have a staff member trained as a facilitator who can then work with your staff. The facilitator’s course is six days long and will cost $1600. Curriculum Services will be able to support schools by providing funds for two days relief teaching. The course will be held in Term 1. Limit of 40 places.
  2. You can hold a two-day course at your school so all staff participate in the professional development. Curriculum Services will be able to run these sessions from Term 2 onwards.
  3. You can send staff to centrally run courses which will commence in Term 2. See the Central Courses 2006 list for more information.
