Children must go to school everyday
On Monday 22 October 2007 the Education Minister Paul Henderson launched a campaign in Alice Springs and Tennant Creek to raise parental awareness about the value of education and the importance of children going to school each day.
The campaign consists of posters, radio and newspaper advertisements with clear information for parents and carers about their responsibility to enrol and send children to school.
It is compulsory that children between the ages of 6 to 15 enrol and attend school every day. Parents must also let the school know each time their child is absent.
A key part of the campaign is the work of the school based Aboriginal and Islander Education Workers (AIEWs), who visit local communities to distribute information about school attendance in person, promoting the value of education and the need for children to attend school every day.
Free 1800 numbers have been introduced to make contacting schools easier and encourage parents to take a more active role in advising about absences.
The awareness campaign is part of a larger strategy to boost school attendance and complements a range of existing programs already in place to support students to attend and stay at school.
Programs such as the football academies and the mentoring and academic support programs provide additional resources that make a real difference for students who would not realise their full potential without support.
