Chief Executive’s Student Forum
The aims of the forum are
- To give students direct input into educational policies and top-level decision- making
- To improve leadership opportunities for secondary students
- To allow DEET to obtain direct input from young people on educational matters
- To engage, inform and strengthen school communities
The CESF is an opportunity for secondary students to express their views on current educational issues or developments and present formal recommendations to the Chief Executive of DEET. The forums allow students to ask questions, make suggestions and debate issues directly with top-level decision makers. Students learn valuable leadership skills during this process and develop their ability to speak confidently and knowledgeably on matters of educational importance.
13 current year nine and ten students were chosen from across the Territory to make up the 16 member panel that will represent the almost 10,000 government secondary school students in 2008. The CESF provides these students with the chance to have direct access to senior departmental decision makers, and to provide input in a meaningful way on policy and strategies. Their input will be invaluable in helping to shape the future of education in the NT. The thirteen students were selected based on their involvement in educational and community activities and applications were very strong, with all the students selected having very good communication skills and strong leadership potential. The first forum for 2008 will be held in Darwin in 26 February when these students will be able to discuss and debate any educational issues with the senior executive group of DEET.
