Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child have to go to school?

If your child is aged between 6 and 15, he or she must be enrolled in a government school or registered non-government school or provided with efficient and suitable home education approved by the Chief Executive of the Northern Territory Department of Employment, Education and Training. This is the law under the Education Act.

Is preschool compulsory?

Preschool is not compulsory, but it is highly recommended. Preschool helps to prepare children for their schooling life. It familiarises them with the school environment and gives them the chance to form long-lasting friendships. Children can start preschool as soon as they turn four.

When should my child start school?

Preschoolers can start as soon as they turn four. Most preschools accept new students at the start of each term. Children who turn five before 30 June may be enrolled in a primary school to enter Transition, the first stage of compulsory schooling, in the intake after their birthday. While schools may have a continuous intake during Terms 1 and 2, the final intake of children into primary school will be Week 1 of Semester 2. Children progress to Year 1 when the school and parents agree that they are ready.

Does my child have to go to the school closest to where we live?

In general, parents are encouraged to consider which school will best suit their child or children. However, if a government school is full or almost full, children from the school’s feeder area will be given priority.

Do I have to pay school fees?

Government schools do not charge tuition fees. However, most schools ask parents or guardians to pay an annual school levy. The levy is used to complement existing programs and provide additional resources for students. The levy is not compulsory, but most parents are willing to pay it so that schools can provide the extra resources. The amount of the levy is determined by the school’s council or parent body. If you find it difficult to pay the levy immediately, most schools will allow part payment by instalments.

What should I do if I have a complaint or request?

You should discuss any complaints with your child’s classroom teacher or the principal. Any policy matters can be addressed through the principal or school council. If the matter cannot be resolved or addressed at the school level, contact Media and Marketing Services on the complaints hotline (08) 8901 4909. For general enquiries please phone (08) 8999 5659.

Can I home school my child?

This is an option under the Education Act. However, the education provided must be approved by the Chief Executive of the Northern Territory Department of Employment, Education and Training. For more information about home schooling, contact Schools Division on 08 8999 5629.

Will my child receive religious education?

Under the Education Act, schools may allow representatives to provide religious education in the school. Parents must consent to their child attending religious education.
