Water Safety Month - competition for remote schools
To celebrate Water Safety Month (September) the Water Safety Branch in
conjunction with the Department of Education Employment and Training
and Imparja Television are running an exciting competition only for
remote schools (including Katherine) in the Northern Territory. Not
only will your school learn about the importance of water safety you
will also be able to showcase your dancing and singing talents on TV!

Arafura Alive
About 600 students from 14 Top End primary schools participated
in the Arafura Alive inter-schools sports carnival at Marrara Stadium
on 18-19 April. The athletes took part in a range of events including
Aussie Rules, Badminton, Basketball, Disabled Athletics, Football,
Golf, Hockey, Bowls, Table Tennis and Volleyball. more
Students Sign Futures Charter
More than 160 Palmerston High School students have made
an important promise about the next 12 months of their lives. The
Year 10 students participated in the Palmerston Futures Charter Signing,
a commitment to be either in school, a job, or in training in 12
month’s time. more
2006 Remote Indigenous NTCE Graduates
Congratulations to our young
men and women who successfully completed the Northern Territory Certificate
of Education (NTCE) in their home communities.
A new and improved arrangement for languages learning in the Northern
Territory
Under the new model, all Middle Years schools in the Darwin,
Palmerston and Rural area will be allocated 0.5 of a Languages teacher
position. This guarantees that each Middle Years school will deliver
a languages program to Years 7-9. More students will now have greater
access to a languages learning service in their schools. more
Parents to receive A to E report on their child's achievement
End of
year reporting to parents will, for the first time, include a new report
describing
A to E achievement for students from
Year 1 to Year 10. This new A to E grading will be used in all schools

scholarships in Teacher Education in 2007. If you are enrolled or planning

Future SACE and the implications for the NTCE
From now until the end
of Term 1 2007, educators, parents and students in the Northern Territory
will have the opportunity
to consider the implications of the future SACE on the NTCE.
Age of Entry Trial - Phase three
The Age of Entry Trial will be expanded
to a further 22 government schools, starting in 2007, giving more young
students the chance to experience the proven benefits of early learning
programs. This will bring the total number of schools participating
in the trial to 53. Visit the Age

Indigenous Students’ Leadership and Mentorship Program (ISLMP) -
Applications for 2007 now open
The Indigenous
Students’ Leadership
and Mentorship Program (ISLMP) provides students with leadership
skills, access to a mentor and funding to help them reach their goals.
Twenty-five secondary school students participated in this year's
inaugural ISLMP. The intake for 2007 has been increased to 50 places.

The winners of the second annual Teaching
in the Territory Excellence Awards were announced at functions
to celebrate World Teachers' Day on Friday 27 October.

Focus on Literacy
The Chief Minister and the Minister for Employment, Education and
Training launched the Focus on Literacy initiative on Thursday
19 October. The new initiative is aimed at improving literacy levels
of Territory children. Focus on Literacy includes
the Raising a Reader information
kit for parents and the Chief
Minister's Literacy Achievement Awards.
2007 NT Government scholarships and bursaries now open
Applications
are now open for the following NT Government scholarships
and bursaries
- 40 higher education scholarships worth $3500 per year
- 40 VET scholarships worth $4000 each
- 20 student teacher bursaries worth $12,000 per year.
Conditions apply and applicants are advised to read the guidelines before completing their applications.
