Indigenous studies

Indigenous Studies is the study of one or more of the histories, cultures, cultural backgrounds, ways of life, values, beliefs and languages of the original peoples of Australia, the Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander people both before the invasion and up to the present day. [NTBOS 1977]

This project was developed to ensure high quality Indigenous Studies teaching and learning programs, linked explicitly to the Northern Territory Curriculum Framework (NTCF) are made available to all schools in the Northern Territory (NT).

Indigenous Studies LogoThe Indigenous Studies: History and Identity Modules 1-10 are a demonstration of the Department of Education and Training’s (DET) commitment to the teaching of Indigenous knowledge systems and to reconciliation.

Teachers are provided with a comprehensive package of teaching materials located in Explore NT via the DET NT Schools’ Portal.

Indigenous Studies: History and Identity modules provide the opportunity for Pre school to Year 10 learners in NT schools to engage in a developmental program through which they may gain understandings of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of Australia, including the historical aspects that have impacted on the lives of contemporary Indigenous peoples. Learners develop historical knowledge, skills, and understandings that will enable them to contribute to just and positive futures for all Australians.

By developing an understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, places, histories, languages and cultures, students will be able to work towards reconciliation and a just society.

Indigenous Studies: History and Identity modules consist of a fully resourced package which provides teachers with quality, accessible, outcome-focused materials that link assessment to the teaching and learning of Indigenous Studies.

The focus outcomes for each module are explicitly linked to the NTCF through the components of EsseNTial Learnings; Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) and the strand of Social Systems and Structures; and Learning Technology.
