Focus on literacy

Improving literacy levels of Territory children is everyone’s business – it is the key to a vibrant and flourishing Territory future.

Promoting literacy in the Northern Territory

Focus on literacy aims to improve the literacy levels of Territory children through promoting the value and joy of reading to Territory children, their families, schools and community.

Parents, young Territorians and other community members are encouraged to promote literacy development in their homes.

There are three key initiatives to support the promotion of literacy:

Raising a Reader

Raising a reader parent information kit

This kit includes information and tips for parents on how they can introduce reading to their young children. The set of six easy-to-read cards targets parents of babies, toddlers and school-aged children. It offers information on the type of books suitable for young children and how parents can instil a love of reading in their children.

The kit is available for download from this website.
