Focus on literacy
Improving literacy levels of Territory children is everyone’s business – it is the key to a vibrant and flourishing Territory future.
Promoting literacy in the Northern Territory
Focus on literacy aims to improve the literacy levels of Territory children through promoting the value and joy of reading to Territory children, their families, schools and community.
Parents, young Territorians and other community members are encouraged to promote literacy development in their homes.
Three key initiatives to support the promotion of literacy will start in the next year:

Raising a reader parent information kitThis kit includes information and tips for parents on how they can introduce reading to their young children. The set of six easy-to-read cards targets parents of babies, toddlers and school-aged children. It offers information on the type of books suitable for young children and how parents can instil a love of reading in their children. A kit will be sent home to every family with a child attending preshool or a childcare centre. Kits will also be displayed in primary schools, childcare centres, out of school care groups, libraries and medical centres across the Territory. The kit is also available for download from this website. |

Chief Minister’s Literacy Achievement AwardsThese new awards will recognise the literacy achievements of students in each classroom. Teachers are encouraged to nominate a student to receive the award from Transition to Year 9. The awards will be presented at schools' end of year assemblies in Term 4 2007. The Chief Minister’s Literacy Achievement Awards are for students in Transition to Year 9 who are attending Northern Territory Government schools. |
School visitsThe Chief Minister, Minister for Employment, Education and Training and other members of the Legislative Assembly will visit schools in 2007 and participate in reading and other literacy activities to support the building of literacy. The school visits will highlight the NT Government’s efforts to raise the profile of literacy and celebrate the joy of reading at childcare centres, preschools and in the early years of schooling (Transition to Year 3). |
