Students to present education ideas to DEET executives

Fifteen secondary school students will meet senior executives from the Employment, Education and Training Department today to express their views on educational issues and present their ideas about the future of education in the Territory.
The Years 11 and 12 students were chosen from across the Territory to represent the almost 10,000 government secondary school students at the Chief Executive’s Student Forum in 2008. Four of the students hail from Central Australia, a further four from Jabiru and two from Nhulunbuy. The remainder are students at either Casuarina Senior College or Darwin High School.
DEET acting chief executive Ken Davies said students will be able to discuss and debate any educational issues with the senior executive group today.
“One of the issues on the agenda today is Middle Years transition. The students will present their thoughts on what is working well and what could be done better in terms of preparing Middle Years students for the transition to the Senior Years.
“They will also hear reports on the Chief Minister’s Youth Round Table and on Closing the Gap, the Indigenous Generational Plan to reduce gap in outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Territorians.”
The Chief Executive’s Student Forum is an initiative of the Building Better Schools package. DEET remains committed to extending opportunities to students to assume a range of roles in educational forums and to participate in decision making.
