Comic book highlights value of education
24 April 2008
A comic book that tells the story of Indigenous youth continuing with schooling at a senior secondary level was launched in Central Australia today.
The comic book Going Places - A Journey to Kate Springs explores issues relevant to Indigenous Central Australian students who are considering the role education has to play in opening up options for their futures.
The Education Department’s General Manager School Alice Springs Paul Newman said, “It’s a story that is real and relevant and which promises to make a real difference.”
Mr Newman said the comic book tells the story of a group of Indigenous teenagers who move to a ‘large’ town to pursue the senior years of their education.
He thanked the Gateways students and staff at Centralian Senior Secondary College who were involved in creating the storyline, the Indigenous Priority Projects Unit in Central Australia, which oversaw development, and Inception Strategies who took the lead with artwork and production.
Mr Newman said 3000 copies of the comic had been printed and would be distributed to all schools in Central Australia.
