TV in the classroom: Territory teachers show and tell
Friday 14 September 2007
Two educators have returned to their schools in the Territory after attending the Australian Children’s Television Foundation’s annual advisory schools meeting in Melbourne recently.
Nakara Primary School classroom teacher Raelene Bailey and Tanami Group School Assistant Principal Jenny Carew addressed the meeting, both describing how they integrate Children’s Television programs and education resources into their school’s literacy programs.
They also provided advice on the broader application to English, Information and Communication Technologies, Media (film/TV), Studies, Arts, SOSE, Values education and personal development.
“It was a wonderful meeting with a great balance of things to share and learn, and the resources were terrific,” Ms Carew said.
Both Nakara and Tanami schools are lighthouse schools for the use and evaluation of Children’s Television Foundation productions and resources.
They provide feedback to the Foundation about their application to curriculum, and teachers develop innovative pedagogy for how the resources are used
The meeting presented teachers with a unique opportunity to view the recently produced and highly acclaimed teacher resource for Mortified, a 26-episode TV series, and detailed the nationally recognised Kahootz, a three-dimensional animation software program from schools.
Ms Bailey described the meeting as well worthwhile.
“I'll be running workshops to show teachers the videos, and work with them to create our own scope and sequence.”
Earlier this year, the Children’s Television Workshop farewelled long-serving Board member Rita Henry, and welcomed Ken Davies as the Territory’s new representative.
