Comments invited on new education certificate
Thursday, 15 March 2007
Parents, school communities and stakeholders are encouraged to comment on the future South Australian Certificate of Education (future SACE) and implications for the Northern Territory Certificate of Education.
The aim of the SACE review, initiated in 2004, was to create more flexible learning arrangements where students would develop the business, interpersonal and employment-related skills needed for their future.
The Northern Territory has used South Australia’s curriculum framework as a basis for the NTCE for many years. It provides a cost effective means of delivering a nationally accredited certificate recognized by tertiary institutions, training bodies and employers across Australia.
Department of Employment, Education and Training Chief Executive Margaret Banks said, “It is essential the Northern Territory strives to develop a well educated workforce with relevant skills, knowledge and values.
“The future Northern Territory Certificate of Education (NTCE) will retain the best of the current certificate while ensuring young Territorians are prepared for careers in a rapidly changing, globalised economy.”
The Department of Employment, Education and Training will host a briefing for business and industry stakeholders later this month. Facilitators have already consulted widely in senior secondary school communities.
Changes to the Northern Territory Certificate of Education will not take place before 2009, and current Year 12 students or those due to begin Year 11 or 12 in 2008 or 2009 will not be affected.
Information about the review and answers to frequently asked questions are available on the Department of Employment, Education and Training website.
Public input will play an important role in final decisions on any changes to the NTCE requirements. Feedback can be provided by 13 April 2007 through local schools, via the website, or via fax or email to:

Comments on the future SACE and what it means for the Northern Territory Certificate of Education will be considered by the Northern Territory Board of Studies.
