Katherine schools earn time off
Friday 27 October 2006
School staff who worked during the April 2006 Katherine flood have been given two days off in recognition of their efforts, Employment, Education and Training Chief Executive Margaret Banks announced today.
Ms Banks said all Northern Territory public servants, including teachers and other school staff, have received two extra days’ leave to recognise their work.
“Today, World Teachers’ Day, is a day when we focus on the talent and dedication of our teachers, so I’m pleased to announce that the efforts of school staff are being highlighted in this way,” she said.To minimise disruption to learning programs, it has been decided that Katherine schools will close on Thursday 14 December and Friday 15 December, making Wednesday 13 December the final day of school for 2006. The decision has been endorsed by school councils.
Some supervision will be available if parents are unable to make other arrangements for the care of their children on those two days. Parents should contact their school for more details.
Ms Banks said the two days off were well deserved.
“Teachers and other school staff did a fantastic job of supporting the community during the flooding,” she said.“Teachers and school staff even sacrificed their own holidays to help out.
“Along with other public servants and Katherine residents, they worked long hours in the evacuation centres and made themselves available to help wherever they were needed.”
