NT celebrates Adult Learners’ Week
Thursday 31 August 2006
Community-based organisations throughout the Territory are staging a range of activities over the next week (1 – 8 September 2006) as part of Adult Learners’ Week celebrations.
Northern Territory Adult Learners’ Week (ALW) is coordinated by the Department of Employment, Education and Training (DEET), and sponsored by the Australian Government Department of Education, Science and Training and Adult Learning Australia Inc.
DEET’s Deputy Chief Executive, John Hassed, said ALW is a great opportunity to encourage Territorians to participate in lifelong learning and promote all forms of adult education, including apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities for both young and mature Territorians.
“Territorians are also encouraged to get involved in a range of activities on offer - spanning basic computer skills, and art and craft workshops, to conservation skills and yoga classes,” he said. “The full calendar of registered ALW events can be found at www.adultlearnersweek.org”
As part of the ALW, members of the public are also invited to visit the Darwin City Mall on Friday 1 September. From 8.30am, Territory FM will conduct an outside broadcast with an ALW flavour, and between 10am – 2pm, members of the public are invited to talk to representatives from the DEET, Australian Apprenticeship Centre, the Northern Territory Training Advisory Councils, Chamber of Commerce and Sky City Casino.
John Hassed announced the 2006 winner of the NT Adult Educator of the Year Award – Annette Gillanders, Managing Director and owner of BiZnorth Pty Ltd.
“This award was open to Territorians working in the field of adult education and learning, and Annette has clearly demonstrated outstanding service and commitment to the industry,” Mr Hassed said.
“She has made it her core business through designing and delivering numerous training courses across the NT, and also volunteered her skills and services to not-for-profit organisations such as Australian Human Resource Institute, Relationships Australia, Rotary and the Australian Marketing Institute.”
Ms Gillanders receives $1000 prize money along with the opportunity to represent the Northern Territory in the Adult Learning Australia Awards.
