DEET Chief Executive opens door to students

Thursday 27 July 2006

Department of Employment, Education and Training (DEET) Chief Executive Margaret Banks has opened the office door to school students who have ideas on how education can be improved in the Northern Territory.

Ms Banks this week launched the Chief Executive’s Student Forum (CESF), which will initially consist of a group of 16 Year 10 and 11 students drawn from all government schools in the Territory.

Members of the student forum will meet the Chief Executive twice this year – initially by teleconference on 31 August – and then in a face-to-face meeting in Darwin in October.

Ms Banks said: “I want to hear the considered thoughts our students have about their education and give them an opportunity to make a positive difference about the future of education in the Territory.

“I am inviting them to a series of meetings with me and other senior department decision-makers and engage us in a meaningful conversation about educational issues in the NT.”

The CESF initiative comes out of the Territory Government’s $42 million Building Better Schools package and is designed to build stronger school communities.

The forum will foster stronger engagements between students and their schools, and provide students with an opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills.

Students are urged to apply for a position on the program. Applications close on
11 August.

Further details and student application forms are available on the Chief Executive's Student Forum webpage.
