Keep your pets safe from fireworks

Thursday 29 June 2006

Pet owners are being asked to spare a thought for the safety of their animals during Territory Day fireworks night, Saturday, 1 July.

The Darwin RSPCA is recommending that dogs and cats be placed in a secured area of the home, such as a bedroom, bathroom or shed, while fireworks are let off in suburban backyards.

Darwin RSPCA CEO, Stefan Wood, said dogs and cats are generally frightened by fireworks noise and their instinct is to escape their surroundings.

“The animals want to run away from the fireworks noise, but nowhere is safe if they get out of the yard,” Mr Wood said.  “If dogs go running they could get run over.”

“Keep your pet in a safe, secure area inside the home or shed instead of the backyard.  The noise will still affect them but they won’t be able to run away.”

“It is also a good idea to put their favourite toy or bed in the room with them.  And it is important not to tie them up as they could strangle themselves.  If you do leave them inside it is wise to draw the curtains and leave the TV or radio on for some background noise or soothing music.”

Mr Wood said, “We also recommend that pets are micro-chipped or at least wear an ID tag so they can be readily identified in case they run away on the night.”

“If you are concerned about your pet’s anxiety, contact your vet to discuss sedation.”

Mr Wood said Darwin’s RSPCA shelter quickly fills with lost pets around fireworks night and owners whose pets go missing can contact the shelter on 8984 3795 on Sunday 2 July 11am-1pm.

Domestic pets are not the only animals to suffer fright on fireworks night, with wildlife also potentially at risk.

If members of the public discover injured wildlife they can contact Wildlife Rescue on 8999 4536.
