NT WorkSafe award winning employer

Friday 2 December 2005

NT WorkSafe has received the State and Territory Award in the 2005 Prime Minister’s Employer of the Year Awards, acknowledging innovation and leadership in the employment of people with a disability. The award was presented last night at a ceremony at Parliament House, Canberra, by Peter Dutton, Minister for Workplace Participation.

NT WorkSafe has received the recognition as an outstanding business for introducing a range of workplace modifications to assist its staff with a disability and encouraging its staff to attend disability awareness courses.

Director of NT WorkSafe, Mr Mark Crossin said, “The modifications and initiatives that we introduced in our workplace really made a difference for NT WorkSafe staff with disabilities.”

“We’ve done things like modifying our mobile phones and headphones for staff with a hearing impairment; modifying numerous workstations; and fitting out a purpose designed office for an employee with multiple sclerosis. We also have special car parking spaces available for workers with limited mobility,” Mr Crossin said.

“The key to success has been our inclusive approach to workplace relations, reflected in our informal training and mentoring arrangements to ensure that staff who are proficient in relevant skills are available to provide training and support to colleagues with disabilities.”

“All NT WorkSafe staff are encouraged to attend staff disability awareness training sessions, which provide them with the opportunity to learn about specific disabilities and to ask questions,” he said.
