Bush Sports Carnival about to kick off
Thursday 25 August 2005
About 400 students from remote schools in central Australia and the Barkly will gather In Ti Tree for the annual Bush Sports Carnival on Wednesday 31 August and Thursday 1 September.
Teams from Utopia Homelands School, Alcoota School, Harts Range School, Bonya Homeland Learning Centre, Elliott CEC, Neutral Junction School, Laramba School and of course Ti Tree School will take part in a program that includes Aussie rules football, softball, T-ball, cross country, track and field, spear throwing and novelty events.
Ti Tree School Principal Zania Liddle said the two-day carnival was the most important date on the district’s calendar and an opportunity to showcase positive activities in the bush.
“The carnival aims to promote sports and good health and to consolidate friendships of people living in remote communities.”
Ms Liddle said former Australian wheelchair basketball star Tim Maloney from the Athletes’ Role Model program would make a guest appearance at the carnival.
Maloney won a gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics, held the world record in the 800m for wheelchair racing (1985-87) and has been a member of seven national Wheelchair Basketball League Championship teams.
Ms Liddle said the carnival would not be possible without the goodwill and hard work of the many agencies and individuals involved. She thanked the participating schools, NT Office of Sport and Recreation and the Anmatjere Community Government Council.
