Friday 29 July 2005

Four outstanding Darwin apprentices are in the running for the Austin Asche New Apprenticeship Apprentice of the Year Award as part of the Department of Employment, Education and Training (DEET) NT Training Awards for 2005.

Champion western style horse rider, Duke of Edinburgh Award holder and award-winning ambulance cadet trainer Ross Jacobsen completed a Certificate III in Plumbing, Draining and Gasfitting with Gold Medal Services. for variety and for a secure future. Ross is interested in ‘green plumbing and ecological sustainability’. Ross won the Dux National Plumbing Apprentice of the Year Award in 2002.

Andrew Colvin of Colemans Printing was ‘sparked by a trade that involves both mental and physical capacities’. To complete a four-year Certificate III in Printing and Graphic Arts in just over three years, Andrew worked extra shifts, opting for new and demanding tasks aided by on-the-job mentoring. A winner of other leadership and vocational awards, he is also into touch football and playing the guitar.

In a letter of support, Hastings Deering’s Colin George says Alan Davy is on track to become a ‘high level diagnostic tradesman’. Alan fast-tracked his learning to achieve a Certificate III Automotive (Mechanical) with six months spare and extra time for field work. A resourceful problem solver, he believes in strong communication and versatility in team situations.

Nathan Heinrich was PowerWater and the NT’s first Cablejoining apprentice. He completed his Certificate III ESI Distribution (Powerline) six months early and aims for a dual qualification as a system electrician. Mapping a new training pathway has been challenging but rewarding for Nathan, who has twice been recognised by Group Training NT. His goal is to ‘own and manage my own electrical company, employing a highly skilled workforce and training apprentices’.

Northern Territory Award winners will be announced at a presentation dinner in Darwin on 10 September. Winners will then go on to represent the Territory at the Australian Training Awards.
