Expo helps students shape future
Friday 29 July 2005
Katherine students seeking ideas about subject choice and what to do when they leave school, will be more informed thanks to the upcoming ‘Futures Expo 2005’. The career-oriented expo takes place at the Katherine High School Gym on Wednesday 3 August.
Futures Expo 2005 is a Northern Territory Government initiative assisting young Territorians to explore and identify career opportunities. Exhibitors at the Expo include training providers, government departments, employers and tertiary institutions.
Deputy Chief Executive of the Department of Employment, Education and Training, John Hassed said: “Futures Expo 2005 provides students, and also their parents and teachers, with the information they need to make informed choices about training, further education and employment.”
“The countdown is on for thousands of students around the Territory planning to leave school at the end of the year, many are trying to make decisions about which path to take after school," he said. “It is important that they are really aware of their options before making decisions about the sort of further study or career they’ll pursue.
“With new career pathways, vocational education and training (VET) and higher education (University) options arising all the time, students need current information to make informed choices.
“And it’s not just students about to leave school that have an interest in the Expo. Students moving into their final secondary years also need to consider subject choices, and the Expo is certainly useful for determining what may be most useful.
Mr Hassed also highlighted the value of the Expo to the business sector, professional associations, industry groups and training organisations. “The Expo presents a unique forum for Territory organisations to inspire, enthuse, excite and above all, inform students about their educational and employment opportunities,” Mr Hassed said. “Employers will also benefit from ideas about how they can attract students to jobs in their industry sector.
Futures Expo is a Territory-wide careers event, with upcoming exhibitions also to be staged in Jabiru (9 August), Darwin (16-17 August), Alice Springs (25-26 August), Tennant Creek (30 August), Nhulunbuy (20 September).
