Tennant Creek and remote schools teachers' strikes

Wednesday 30 March 2005

The Department of Employment, Education and Training (DEET) advises that 60% of Tennant Creek and remote schools teachers were at school. The level of student attendance varied from school to school.

Although there was some disruption to normal school programs, appropriate supervision was provided for all children who attended school.

The Department regrets any inconvenience that this industrial action may have caused to parents and students and thanks them for their continued patience.

The Department of Employment, Education and Training values and supports its teachers and would prefer constructive negotiation prior to industrial action. The Commissioner for Public Employment remains determined to reach an agreement with the Australian Education Union as quickly as possible and will seek every opportunity to progress such an agreement.
