Alice Springs and Katherine teachers' strikes
Wednesday 23 March 2005The Department of Employment, Education and Training (DEET) advises that all Katherine and Alice Springs schools remained open during the teachers' strike today.
66% of Katherine and Alice Springs teachers were at school. The level of student attendance varied from school to school.
Although there was some disruption to normal school programs, appropriate supervision was provided for all children who attended school.
Full-day strikes are scheduled for Tennant Creek and remote area schools next week on Wednesday, 30 March.
It is unlikely that any school in these areas will be closed. A notice will be sent home to all parents advising the level of supervision available at their school.
The Department regrets any inconvenience that this industrial action may cause to parents and students and thanks them for their continued patience.
The Department of Employment, Education and Training values and supports its teachers and would prefer constructive negotiation prior to industrial action. The Commissioner for Public Employment remains determined to reach an agreement with the Australian Education Union as quickly as possible and will seek every opportunity to progress such an agreement.
