Taminmin galloping ahead with racing course
6 November 2007
The Melbourne Cup may be the race that stops a nation, but there’s no stopping Taminmin High School.
The booming rural school already has a full field of 15 starters in its new Certificate I and II horse racing (Stable Hand) course, for 2008.
Assistant Principal Andrew Oliver said the Vocational and Education Training course captured the imagination of students as soon as it was announced.
“We have four brood mares in foal, and we’ll be working closely with the Darwin Turf Club’s Clerk of Course, so students will get a taste for what it’s really like in the horse racing world.”
And if all goes to plan, Taminmin High School will have its own race horse by the time the nation stops to watch next year’s Melbourne Cup.
“It’s an exciting thought and something that will engage a lot of students,” Mr Oliver said.
