Nhulunbuy teacher rides wave of success

29 March 2007

Congratulations are in order to Nhulunbuy High School teacher Denise Marrable who represented the Territory at the national titles in Perth last week.

Denise, and the NT team, competed in three races in testing conditions against Australia’s best surf lifesavers.

The championships this year were particularly special with 2007 being the National Year of Surf Lifesaving.

Denise had the honour of carrying the Territory flag in a memorial procession recognising the 12 Australian lifesavers who have died in the line of duty over the past 100 years.

"It was a great honour for me, and a moving service," Denise said.

A few weeks ago, Denise was crowned NT Surf Lifesaver of the Year in what was a double celebration for her family. Denise’s daughter Holly won the NT Under-17 title. They received their awards from Administrator Ted Egan at a ceremony in Darwin.

Denise, who teaches health and physical education, described surf life saving as a passion.

"I support a lot of people who are in training for their surf bronze medallions, and I love every minute of it," she said.

Denise said many students at Nhulunbuy High School had attained their surf bronzes.

"Many of our students take on leaderships role in the school surf league in Nhulunbuy," she said.
