Equipment boost for Jabiru Training Centre

Thursday, 25 January 2007

DEET’s Jabiru Training Centre is better equipped than ever to deliver quality engineering training, thanks to an ongoing partnership with mining giant Energy Resources Australia (ERA).

The training centre was recently given a metal turning lathe and a milling machine, which will be used in courses to train apprentices and trainees in the engineering trades.

DEET Deputy Chief Executive John Hassed said the two machines were prized additions to the Jabiru Training Centre workshop.

"Our Training Centre Manager in Jabiru Roger Harvey is in the process of checking and testing the machines, which were formerly housed at the Ranger Mine’s old apprentice workshop," Mr Hassed said.

DEET, Charles Darwin University and ERA will co-deliver courses in operating the milling machine, the metal lathe, and other tools of the trade, as well as in tool and machinery safety.

Mr Hassed said: "DEET is very grateful to ERA for the machines, which are worth about $20,000, and which assist in improving the Training Centre as an excellent environment for teaching the engineering trade."

"ERA’s willingness to partner with us is a terrific example of how business and government can work together to equip Territorians with skills that allow them to find or improve their job prospects."
