School art competition to raise awareness of democracy

2 February 2007

A school art competition designed to promote parliamentary democracy was launched at Gillen Primary School in Alice Springs this week.

The Speaker of the NT Legislative Assembly Jane Aagaard launched the competition, saying primary schools in Central Australia have been asked to submit a painting on the theme Community Leadership.

Mrs Aagaard said selected entries would be displayed in the Yeperenye Centre, with the winning entry being used on the official Parliamentary Programme of the April sittings, which will be held in Alice Springs.

The competition is open to Year 5-6 classes and entries will be limited to one per school. Interested schools will be provided with a canvas measuring 100cm x 80cm on which to submit entries.

The winning schools will be given prizes of $3000, $1000 and $500 and their entries will be permanently displayed in Parliament House.

Mrs Aagaard said the competition would be one of a number of school-based events to be run during the sittings period – 17-19 April – and that schools are encouraged to become involved in the activities.
