Apprenticeships and traineeships – the way ahead
Wednesday, 24 January 2007
Apprenticeships and traineeships are great career options for Territorians– providing an opportunity to earn while you learn.
Deputy Chief Executive, of the Department of Employment, Education and Training (DEET) John Hassed said young Territorians should consider starting an apprenticeship or traineeship while they are at school or when they complete their schooling.
"Many mature age people have also recognised the value of apprenticeships or traineeships – either to embark on a new career or to gain a nationally recognised qualification while working in their existing jobs," Mr Hassed said.
School students seeking to undertake a school based apprenticeship or traineeship while completing their schooling, should speak to their careers adviser or VET Co-ordinator.
School leavers, mature aged Territorians or existing workers should contact Australian Apprenticeships Northern Territory on 1300 137 130 for advice on apprenticeships or traineeships.
Subsidies are available from the Australian Government for eligible employers of apprentices and trainees, with the Northern Territory Government providing funding for the training delivered by registered training organisations for most apprenticeships and traineeships.
The Northern Territory Government also provides some financial support for apprentices and trainees in skill shortage occupations through the Employer Assistance Incentive Scheme.
"With skills shortages being experienced across Australia, employers in the Territory can invest in the future of their business by taking on apprentices or trainees or providing existing workers access to this type of training," Mr Hassed said.
"For Territorians looking for employment or seeking a career change, an apprenticeship or traineeship is a great pathway to a successful and rewarding career," he said.
