Scholarships up for grabs for future indigenous teachers

Eligible people are encouraged to apply for the scholarships targeted at increasing opportunities for Indigenous Territorians to become teachers.

The scholarships are part of the “More Indigenous Teachers Plan”. “The NT Government is committed to seeing forty graduating Indigenous teachers during the next four years.

The NT government has committed $2 million funding to the Indigenous Scholarship Program until the end of 2008.

There are four study support programs which are targeted at youth, school leavers and the general community – with an emphasis on delivering opportunities to remote people.

The four study support programs include cadetships, fellowships, scholarships and pilot apprenticeships.

The pilot apprenticeships program is focused upon delivering opportunities to people in remote areas. Virtually any Indigenous person from any walk of life can apply to this program.

The study programs are funded through the Indigenous Education Strategic Initiatives Program (IESIP) funding, from the Australian Government Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST).

The Indigenous Scholarship Program which commences in February 2007, and has eight places available. The scholarship provides participants with a salary whilst studying, reimbursement of HECS fees and a twelve week work placement in DEET and continued support over the course of study in line with program requirements.
