Four teachers presented with excellence awards

Four Territory teachers were honoured for their professional excellence at the launch of Education Week in Darwin on 28 August.

Employment, Education and Training Minister Syd Stirling launched Education Week in Raintree Park in Darwin City Mall – along with National Literacy and Numeracy Week and the Territory’s own Asia in Schools Week.

Marilyn Van Den Elzen from Wagaman Primary School and Susan Cameron from Darwin High School each received an Excellence in Literacy Teaching award, sponsored by the Australian Literacy Educators’ Association Top End Council.

The awards are presented in recognition of the NT teachers who demonstrate exemplary skills and understandings in the planning, teaching and assessing of literacy.

Ruth Sheridan of Palmerston High School won this year’s Studies of Society and the Environment award, sponsored by the Social Educators’ Association of the Northern Territory.

And Ester Modoh, from Millner Primary School, won the Asia In Schools Award.

Mr Stirling also launched the 2006 Teaching in the Territory Excellence Awards.

Nominations can be made in the categories of Teacher of the Year, Early Career Teacher of the Year, School of the Year and four individual teaching excellence awards.

Nominations close on 27 September and will be presented on World Teachers’ Day – 27 October.
