Artists grants for nine schools

Tuesday 3 October 2006

Nine Territory schools have received grants of up to $5000 under the 2006 Artists in Schools (AiS) program.

They are Batchelor Area School, Casuarina Senior College, Darwin High School, Kormilda College, Murrupurtiyanuwu Catholic School, Numbulwar CEC, Sadadeen Primary, Sanderson High School and Yirrkala CEC.

Artists in Schools Coordinator Vivienne Blandy said she was encouraged by the quality, quantity and variety of submissions.

“The grants have been awarded to support programs that will explore dance, music, theatre, craft, video, circus and other art forms.”

Ms Blandy said AiS is about providing students, teachers, parents and the wider community with first-hand opportunities to work with professional artists.

“The program enriches school art programs and encourages future artists and arts audiences in a variety of forms.”

“Students will have the opportunity to experience the creative processes, skills, attitudes and disciplines an artist brings to their work.”

DEET and the Department of Natural Resources, Environment and the Arts (NRETA), through Arts NT, each contribute $20,000 to the annual school-based grants program.
