World Teachers' Day

World Teachers’ Day started in 1994 to commemorate the joint 1966 signing of the International Labour Organisation/United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Origination recommendation concerning the status of teachers. World Teachers’ Day is now celebrated in over 100 countries and is dedicated to recognising "quality teachers for quality education".

In Australia World Teachers’ Day is celebrated on the last Friday of October. Each year the Department of Employment, Education and Training coordinates annual World Teachers’ Day functions in Darwin, Nhulunbuy, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs to recognise the extraordinary contributions that teachers in the Northern Territory make to their communities.
