School art exhibition
Classes from Darwin, Palmerston and rural primary schools are invited to enter the art exhibition being held as part of the opening of the Darwin Convention Centre. Artwork submitted by classes will be displayed in the convention centre during the opening celebrations starting Wednesday 18 June 2008.
The theme of the exhibition is Our Connection with the Sea.
Using this theme, learners could investigate their past, current and future connections including:
- saltwater people – Indigenous culture
- local conservation and preservation issues such as protection of turtles, seasnakes, dugong, dolphin species
- remembering our past, e.g. the bombing of Darwin and those killed at sea, heritage trails leading to the wharf – Traveller’s (Chinaman’s) Walk and the walk celebrating the lives of Territory women through Damoe Ra Park
- relationships within the region and across the water to Asia
- livelihoods e.g. pearling, fishing, hunting.
Awards
Schools have the opportunity to win $1000 with the Chief Minister announcing his sponsorship of the Chief Minister’s Choice Award for the exhibition.
The public can also vote for their favourite art piece during the opening celebrations in the People’s Choice Award, with the winning school receiving a further $1000.
